HoLa Gifted and Talented Services

Policies and procedures used to identify students as gifted and talented:

HoLa engages its students in regular assessments of skills and comprehension, and provides robust differentiation for students across subjects based on ongoing assessment data (Fountas & Pinnell, Interim Assessments administered three times per year in Math and Language Arts, and curriculum based unit assessments, as well as end of year state assessments). All students in 8th grade take Algebra 1, and students in 7th and 8th grades all participate in a College Board-approved AP Spanish Language and Culture course, with the option to take the AP assessment on site at the end of 8th grade. HoLa teachers challenge students using digital resources such as IXL, Amplify, Benchmark Advance, and Zearn tailored to each student’s respective level.

The continuum of services offered to gifted and talented students:

Students participate in programming exceeding grade level standards in areas of reading, writing and math across grade levels, and have the opportunity to participate in Algebra 1 as well as AP Spanish Language and Culture. Further, there are a wide range of academic clubs and enrichment offerings aligned to students’ interests and demonstrated talents. Several of the clubs have academic criteria that students must meet, such as Math Club, Science Olympiad, Spelling Bee, and our CyberPatriot Teams.

The criteria used for participation:

Student participation in leveled groups or enrichment clubs/teams is based upon data from student records, NJSLA, Start Strong (2021), Fountas & Pinnell reading assessments, interim assessments and/or unit assessments, depending on the particular subject/group. Every student’s proficiency against grade level standards is tracked and monitored by the instructional staff.
